How do you know if the gas engineer is fully qualified?

Dave Lambert • Jan 07, 2013

Unfortunately the gas industry has its fair share of rogue traders in operation

Whenever we invite a professional into our homes we like to be reassured they are fully trained to do the job. This is particularly important when it involves gas appliances when the risk to people and property is high.

But how do we know the gas fitter we’ve been recommended is fully qualified? The simple answer is: research. Checking the credentials of a boiler repairer may take a few minutes out of your day but it will ensure you protect not only your appliances but also the lives of you and your family.

Unfortunately the gas industry has its fair share of rogue traders in operation. There are an estimated 7,500 illegal gas fitters in the UK and over 20 people die every year from carbon monoxide poisoning caused as a result of gas appliances which have not been correctly installed.

All qualified gas fitters are registered with industry regulator Gas Safe. Anyone who isn’t is working illegally. When a gas fitter visits your home, they should be able to show you their Gas Safe ID card. The reverse of this card will specify which gas appliances the engineer is qualified to service or fix and not every fitter will be qualified to work on everything.

With the rise in bogus caller/distraction burglaries, it is always advisable to check this ID card before letting an engineer into your home. You can also check their credentials online on at www.gassaferegister.co.uk , by texting Gas and the engineer’s licence number to 85080 and by calling Gas Safe free on 0800 4085500 .

As one of Essex’s most respected gas training providers, we offer a comprehensive range of assessments and courses to ensure our engineers enter the industry with safety paramount in their minds. Shoddy workmanship not only gives the industry a bad name but also costs homeowners considerable sums of money to rectify in the long-run and can put the lives of their families at risk.

If you are considering a career in the gas industry, make sure you go down the proper route and back up your knowledge and experience from work placements with formal qualifications. This will allow you to venture out on your own and enjoy the rewards of your expertise.
